Is one graft the same as one hair?
No — a graft is a follicular unit containing one to four hairs, so most people average a little over two hairs per graft.
Hair grows in natural clusters rather than as isolated strands. A graft is one of those clusters, moved intact with its bulb and sheath. Two thousand grafts therefore represents roughly four to five thousand individual hairs.
This is worth knowing because it is where comparisons between clinics break down. A quote expressed in hairs sounds roughly twice as impressive as the same quote expressed in grafts. When comparing, make sure both numbers are the same unit.
Distribution matters as much as the total. Single-hair units belong at the leading edge of the hairline, where a soft irregular transition is what makes it read as natural. Two- and three-hair units sit behind, where they build volume without being individually visible.
