Before you book a flight

Mexico or here?

Tijuana, Mexico City and Cancún all have genuinely capable hair surgeons, and proximity makes Mexico the practical medical-tourism option for a lot of American patients. We are not going to pretend otherwise.

But the variable that decides your outcome is not the country on the clinic’s address.

The actual variable

Who operates, and who follows up

Hair restoration is assessed over twelve to eighteen months, not on the day of surgery. Grafts shed at two to four weeks, regrowth begins around months three to six, and problems surface around month eight. Every one of those checkpoints assumes someone can examine your scalp under magnification.

Hair restoration is normally delivered by a physician working with a trained clinical team, and that is a perfectly sound model — what matters is that a licensed physician directs the plan, that the team is properly trained, and that you can reach them afterwards. Verifying any of that from another country, in advance, is genuinely difficult.

And the one complication that cannot be reversed is over-harvesting of the donor zone. A business model built on session volume has a structural incentive to take more grafts today. That incentive is not Mexican or Turkish; it is commercial.

What actually differs

Surgical skill

Can be excellent in either place. Neither country holds a monopoly on it.

Who performs it

The thing to verify. Ask for the answer in writing before any deposit.

Follow-up at month eight

A short drive, or an international flight and an emailed photograph.

Revision

Usually paid for twice if the original was done abroad.

Regulatory recourse

A state medical board, or a foreign jurisdiction.

Donor strategy

Planned across your lifetime, or optimised for one large session.

A reasonable use of us

Bring the quote in

If you are weighing a Mexican or Turkish quote, bring it to a consultation. We will tell you honestly what we make of the plan — including if it looks reasonable, which sometimes it does.

What we will do is examine your donor zone and tell you whether the graft count you have been quoted is consistent with what you actually have to spend. That is a conversation worth having before you buy a flight.

Questions

It can be, and Mexico has genuinely skilled surgeons. The risk is not the country — it is variability. Clinic standards, oversight and how much physician time goes into planning differ widely, and verifying any of that from another country before you travel is hard.
We do not publish prices. What we will say is that the price comparison people make is usually incomplete, because it prices the procedure and not the twelve to eighteen months of assessment that follow it, or the cost of revision if growth disappoints.
That is the question worth asking before you book. Poor growth shows up around month eight. Establish in writing who assesses it, where, and at whose cost — because at that point you are no longer in the country where it was done.
